KangaWrap is a soft, cool, lightweight baby wrap developed by midwives at Maidstone & Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust which meets Kangaroo Care criteria and offers special closeness with your baby.
Kangaroo Care was developed in Bogota, Columbia in the early 1980s by Rey and Martinez. They found themselves in a situation where there were not enough incubators, so babies born prematurely were strapped on to their mothers. The mortality rate for these premature infants reduced from 70% to 30%. Research studies since have reported benefits of Kangaroo Care in all types of care setting.
Kangaroo care is a technique practised on newborns, usually premature infants where the baby is placed in direct skin-to-skin contact with the mother or father. Research studies have shown that Kangaroo Care is associated with better weight gain, shorter hospital stay, fewer breathing problems, less crying, better temperature control and more successful breastfeeding.
The Kangawrap is made by Trade4Life, a not for profit organisation run on fair trade principles. Trade4Life was set up to improve the livelihoods of disadvantaged people in developing countries by creating ethical trading opportunities. From the success of KangaWrap to date and via the Asha Project, Trade4Life now sponsors two midwives in Seelampur slum in India.
